LEARNING TO ROLLER-SKATE
I started this project wanting to use our swimming unit but couldn't find a good interactive website for students to use so I switched to our Roller skating unit. This unit lasts 5 days. The goal of this unit is to teach every child how to get up from the floor with their skates on, how to fall correctly, stand in skates, stop while moving forward and backwards, and how to skate forward and backward. During the first few days I am instructing and showing my students how to complete each of these tasks. Their homework for the night is to look on You Tube for a video that will help them with the task from that day that was difficult for them. The next day they will need to practice that skill before moving on to the next skill. The last day of the unit I will have students find their heart rate zone and use the monitors to see if they can reach their zone and for how long. I will create a simple form on google doc where students can submit their heart rate monitor infromation. Their information will show up in a google spread sheet. Students would access the form from my website.
At this point I am still in the beginning of my lesson and the video of my students learning the first few skills of skating wouldn't upload. So....I will tell you that so far students have learned how to fall correctly, stand up, T stand and skate forward. This unit has been successful and we will continue to use this unit during P.E. I have not yet used the heart rate monitors or the google doc but will be doing that this Friday. Maybe for next year I would have daily feedback from my students on their success in skating.
